Languedoc
Rhian, Mam and I spent last week in the Languedoc region of France. We stayed in the village of Capestang which is the Hérault département north of Narbonne and west of Béziers.
While we were there we visited Béziers, Pézenas, Carcassonne, Narbonne, Sète, Agde, Marseillan, Oppidum d’Ensérune and the Haut-Languedoc (Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc). We also made it the a Pro D2 rugby match between Béziers and Toulon.
We consumed some wonderful food and drink. We particularly enjoyed La Galiniere in Capestang and Les Demoiselles Dupuy in Sète. Both are highly recommended. Every dish at La Galiniere was fantastic but I particularly enjoyed the salade campagnarde (a salad of fried duck hearts and lardons). La Galiniere also had a smugness inducing cheese trolley. Roquefort (served with a fig jam), Cantal and goat’s cheese (severed with a drizzle of honey) were all favourites.
Les Demoiselles Dupuy sold only fish. For starters there were mussels and oysters from the nearby Étang de Thau and for the main course there was freshly grilled dorade (sea bream), monkfish and cuttlefish marinated with lemon juice, olive oil and (I think) caraway seeds.
The wine was wonderful, abundant and absurdly cheap. €1.50 a litre for the AOC stuff and €0.90 for the (very good) plonk.
One thing I realised whilst there was that you don’t see much dog shit on the streets in the UK any more. The pavements in Béziers were covered in it.
Photos in the usual place.
