Breakfast in South India
South India is a great place to enjoy a filling, cheap and delicious breakfast. The majority of the dishes are breads and pancakes made from rice flour and served with sambar and coconut chutney into which pieces of the bread are dipped.
Here are some of our favourites:
- Dosa – huge rice flour pancake (even bigger in it’s paper variety). This is usually served with sambar and a coconut chutney into which pieces of the dosa are dipped. A favourite of Rhian’s is the masala dosa where the dosa is filled with a mildly spiced combination of potatoes and onions (bhaji).
- Idli – steamed rice cakes which act as bland and healthy vehicles for sambar and chutney.
- Vada – savoury rice flour doughnuts often spiced with fresh chilli. Broken and dipped into the same sambar and chutney.
- Uttapam – a thick rice flour pancake similar in texture to a British crumpet and often filled with onions or tomato.
